Console Yourself

yodasmall.jpgNamco-Bandai surprised the crowds at this years Consumer Electronics Show by unveiling one of the oddest crossovers in video game history.

Onlookers were treated to a Soul Calibur IV trailer that included Star Wars characters Darth Vader and Yoda together with the series mainstays.  Check it out in the following video -

consoleyourselfws22.pngIt’s exactly 20 years since Samus Aran first faced the Motherbrain and the Metroid menace (In English anyway, Metroid appeared on Nintendos FDS a year earlier in Japan).   She spans the growth of video games and the lasting poularity of the series is due entirely to the sheer playability of the games… no hype or hard core fan base is necessary when you have a gameplay model as close to perfect as this.

Indeed,  there is a Metroid game for every Nintendo system ever released with the exception of the Gameboy Color and DS… (But more on that later).  Metroid Prime 3: Corruption has been released for Nintendo’s Wii to coincide with this anniversary and they’ve put the benchmark Super Metroid out on the Virtual Console too.  Corruption is the 3rd and last in the Prime games, the sub series that took Samus from 2 to 3 dimensions and into the popular realm of the FPS.

consoleyourselfws21.pngFinally as we head towards September, the games have started trickling in ready for the busy season and Microsoft have even confirmed that prospective 360 owners in the UK will finally see the price cut that has been promised to the rest of the world as well as the eventual release of the Elite version of the system. All of which should help keep the 360 as the UK’s best-selling next gen system despite the rampaging Wii gaining ground at a rate of 3 sales to 1.

And if you’re looking for a game to show off you new cheaper machine then look no further than the spiritual successor to the System Shock series, Bioshock, a game that the industry is fast running out of superlatives for. Personally, plaudits for engrossing narrative, great art direction and atmosphere you could cut with a harpoon gun are all well and good on their own - but when you look at pictures, play the demo and read all the features, you’ll begin to get a composite picture of a game that brings everything together into an experience that’s been described as ‘virtually unassailable’ by 1up, and IGN have called an ‘essential gaming experience’.

consoleyourselfws2.pngNo prizes for guessing the biggest games news since last weeks’ Console Yourself.

The postponement of Grand Theft Auto IV from Christmas this year to Q2 of next has both fans and the industry a-buzz.  Sony-centrics were quick to claim that the 360 DVD format was too small and compression issues stalled production. Microsoft and 360 supporters speculated that all too familiar problems that third party companies have reported when developing for the PS3 hardware were the problem.

I have another theory.

consoleyourselfws2111.pngRemember how bad Star Wars games used to be?

Okay, you had the classic wireframe arcade game and Knights of the Old Republic had it’s fans but lets be honest with ourselves, Lucasarts churned out games as cheaply as possible because they new they’d sell like hot cakes anyway. Then what happened? Out of the ashes of the Prequel Trilogy and a ruined franchise something wonderful arose like blocky plastic phoenix, it was still Star Wars but it was something else too… It was Lego!

consoleyourselfws211.pngBit opinion heavy this week as E3 was a huge let down but nothing else happens while it’s on….

When is a price cut not a price a cut?  When it’s a Sony stock clearance sale.  Sony confirmed yesterday that when current stocks of the $499 60gb Playstation 3 are deplete it will be discontinued and leave only the $599 80gb model on the market. So if you want a Blu-Ray player that also plays videogames for $499 then you’d better be quick.  Personally, there’s something about this whole PS3 price cut that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

consoleyourselfws21.pngE3 kicks off to today and ahead of the games industry’s big top extravaganza two of the Stars of the show have been bickering over who gets the spotlight.

After an early flyer for Circuit City was found showing the PS3 listed at $499, Sony stated: ‘That CC flyer is just a rumor, so we don’t have anything else to comment on regarding it.’ Then, after a scan of the flyer then emerged online, Sony at first refused to comment but by the morning of Monday 9th an official announcement was released stating that the US market would see the release of an 80Gb PS3 bundled with Motorstorm retailing at $599 and that the 60GB unit would take a $100 price cut effective immediately.

consoleyourselfws2.pngNext Gen Gaming – Don’t you just love it? Not if you’re a third party developer for the PS3 apparently!

2K sports, EA and Namco Bandai all seem to be having a few issues keeping their PS3 releases up to spec with the Xbox 360 versions.  American Football titles All Pro Football 2K8 and EAs Madden and NCAA 08 games are set to run at a thoroughly last gen 30FPS on the Sony machine – half that of the 360 versions.

Now before three quarters of the gaming world shrugs it’s collective shoulders in a show of mass indifference it’s worth bearing in mind that EA develops the FIFA games and is a company who’s UK market share has doubled in the previous year.

Tuesday 26th June, 2007consoleyourselfws24.png

About 30 seconds after last Tuesdays weekly games news round up went online the news broke that Manhunt 2 for the PS2 and Wii had been refused a certificate by the BBFC (the UK’s entertainment certification body) meaning that it would be illegal to sell the game in the territory with the third largest games market.

Shortly after that the game was given the ‘Death Sentence’ AO certificate by the ESRB in the USA the result of which would be major stockists such as Walmart not having the game on their shelves. On Wednesday Rockstar released a statement standing by their software but unfortunately Sony and Nintendo didn’t feel the same way and both companies disowned the project, saying that they didn’t want anything to do with the game. No surprise then that by Thursday, Take 2 had announced that the July 10th release date of Manhunt 2 had been delayed.

consoleyourselfws22.pngWell I got a bit of abuse for not mentioning Halo3 last week so to kick things off, some Halo3 tittle-tattle:

It seems that Bungie are employing the same kind of enigmatic marketing that we’ve seen recently for the upcoming The Dark Knight movie. There have been cryptic emails flying about along with website clues and the like. The most pertinent of which has revealed a countdown timer which you can see here. However, no one yet seems to know what the countdown is counting down to.

The Impending Oil Crisis

quote I am a little leary of the situation. The truth will come out when, and if the US economy, and the dollar begins to strengthen. If prices remain high, you’ll know someone is lying. Either OPEC doesn’t have the supply they claim they have, or Analysts are incorrect when they say demand has decreased. Personally, I don’t buy the claim that demand has decreased. Population is ever increasing, so, the the demand should always be increasing. quote
