Pirates

Monday, December 17th, 2007

'Transformers'AwardsDaily has posted the fifteen films shortlisted for this year’s Best Special Effects Oscar:

Beowulf / The Bourne Ultimatum / Evan Almighty / The Golden Compass / Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix / I Am Legend / Live Free or Die Hard / National Treasure: Book of Secrets / Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End / Ratatouille / Spider-Man 3 / Sunshine / 300 / Transformers / The Water Horse

Only three of these candidates will make the cut as official nominees; and the only real lock is Michael Bay’s Transformers. As for the other two? My bet is on Pirates 3 and The Golden Compass, but this list is really tough to narrow down. We’ll find out for sure when the Academy Awards nominees are announced January 22.

oceansthirteensmall.jpgVariety reports that Ocean’s Thirteen knocked Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End off the top of the US box office at the weekend, taking $37.1 million in the process.

The third episode of the super-cool heist franchise moved from it’s predecessor’s winter release slot but just about managed to hold its own and keep the series viable (Ocean’s Twelve, despite poor critical notices, hauled in $39.1 million in its first frame and Ocean’s Eleven achieved $38.1 million in its debut).

The latest star-studded installment, written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, and produced by Jerry Weintraub scored slightly below expectations despite postitive reviews. Tracking data had the movie on a pace to jump ahead of the other two films in the series by taking in around $40 million.

Captain BarbossaPirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End took the number one spot at the US box office for a second consecutive weekend, but took a 62% plunge from its opening weekend, reports Variety.

Grossing $42.3 million over the weekend, the film’s US tally now stands at $216.5 million after ten days. This figure falls well short of the $258.4 million record set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in the same amount of time last summer. 2007’s biggest earner, Spider-Man 3, managed $240.2 million during its first ten days of play.

However, the third Pirates adventure only took a 46% percent drop from its opening frame in international markets, raking in $105.4 million in 103 countries. The international total has now hit $408.8 million, representing 65% of the worldwide total of $625.3 million — already the 29th highest of all time.

pirates3_lead1.jpgRather predictably, and despite some unkind reviews, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End has broadsided the global box office, raking in an astonishing $126.5 domestically and $205.5 million internationally in 102 markets reports Variety.

With takings bolstered by a limited US release on thursday, the third installment of the swashbuckling trilogy inspired by a Disney theme park attraction is on track to be the biggest four-day Memorial Day weekend opener ever, beating out the last pic in the X-Men series.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End performed astonishingly well in the U.K. over the bank holiday weekend, taking $25.8 million. The film has yet to open in India and China.

Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’Moviegoers can stick around until after the end credits of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End to discover an additional scene.

If you’re patient enough to brave another couple of minutes of credits following the nearly three hours the film ran for, you will get to see an extra scene that is part of the overall story, and not just a quick clip or joke.

The final film in the Pirates trilogy is now playing in cinemas. You can read our review of the movie at this link.

keithrichardssmall.jpgPirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End director Gore Verbinski has told SCI FI Wire that directing Keith Richards in the third outing of the swashbuckling franchise came naturally.

‘Well, he’s playing a pirate,’ said Verbinski ’so you just try to make him feel comfortable and try to capture Keith. He’s just a completely unique human being, there is nobody else like him, so we adapted our filming style to suit Keith.’

In Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End the Rolling Stones guitarist plays Captain Teague, a rascal who may or may not be the father of Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp.

piratessmall.jpgIGN reports that Australia’s biggest selling daily newspaper the Herald Sun, after screening eight scenes from the still unfinished Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, siezed the opportuniy to quiz Jerry Bruckheimer about the future of the swashbuckling franchise.

This is the end,’ said Bruckheimer, ‘This is the end of the trilogy.”

When asked if there could be a possibility of a spin-off movie featuring just Captain Jack Sparrow, the veteran producer said ‘Whether there will be another movie depends on whether we can create something new and different, but this is the end,‘  adding, ‘but whether one of the characters or a couple of the characters continue on, it’s a possibility. … Certainly, in a moment at the end of the film there is a hope that something else might happen.’

JimHillMedia.com reports that Johnny Depp has told Walt Disney Studios that he’d be willing to reprise the role of Capt. Jack Sparrow which is why the House of Mouse has already tentatively made plans to shoot Pirates 4 in 2009.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Synopsis

    space

    Plot Outline:
It is a dark time as the Age of Piracy nears to a close. Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Company has gained control of the terrifying ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman, and its malevolent, vengeful captain, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). The Dutchman now roams the seven seas, unstoppable, destroying pirate ships without mercy under the command of Admiral Norrington.

Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) embark on a desperate quest to gather the Nine Lords of the Brethren Court, their only hope to defeat Beckett, the Flying Dutchman, and his Armada.

But one of the Lords is missing — Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), either the best or worst pirate ever, and now trapped in Davy Jones’ Locker, thanks to his encounter with the monstrous Kraken.

In an increasingly shaky alliance, our heroes, including Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), Pintel and Ragetti, must first travel to dangerous, exotic Singapore and confront Chinese pirate Captain Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat) to gain charts, and a ship, that will take them off to world’s end, to rescue Jack.

But even if Captain Jack is successfully rescued, the gathering of the legendary Brethren Court may not be enough to hold back the fearsome tide of Beckett, Davy Jones and their powerful Armada…unless the capricious sea goddess Calypso, imprisoned in human form, can be freed and convinced to come to their aid.

As betrayal piles upon betrayal, it becomes clear that Jack, Will, Elizabeth, Sao Feng and Barbossa each have their own agenda, and no one can be trusted. Yet each much choose a side, and make their final alliances for one last battle, in a titanic showdown that could eliminate the freedom-loving pirates from the seven seas — forever.
