Iron Man

Monday, May 12th, 2008

‘Speed Racer’The Wachowski’s big-budget flick Speed Racer came in a distant third at the US box office this weekend with a disappointing $18.5 million haul.

Not only did the film fail to dislodge the previous week’s number 1, Iron Man, from the top spot, it even ranked behind the Ashton Kutcher/Cameron Diaz rom-com What Happens in Vegas ($20.2 million).

Iron Man, meanwhile, continues to perform strong, taking in $51.2 million on its second week of release. This amounts to a very respectable 48.1% drop from last week and brings the movie’s total domestic gross up to $177.8 million.

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron ManFollowing the critical and financial success of Iron Man over the last week, Entertainment Weekly spoke with director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. about the prospect of doing  a sequel.

While Favreau concedes that there’s “no formal arrangement yet”, he also confirms that there’s definitely “a level of enthusiasm from myself and the cast to tell more stories” and “a lot of ideas that we all have now”. One such idea that seems to be compelling to all of them is the story of Tony Stark’s battle with alcohol.

Demon in a Bottle is one of the very strongest story lines of the of the series, and Iron Man is not a comic book character who is known for having wonderful storylines. He’s known for having great suits, great characters, but the villains kind of get thin at times, and it’s so very dated when you look at Communism and the metaphor. Politically, much of it doesn’t hold up well. And the Mandarin is incredibly challenging in that respect. So we have challenges ahead of us.”

'Iron Man' teaser posterIt’s pay day at Marvel Studios after the studio’s first independently produced film surpassed even the more optimistic estimations at the US and international box office.

In the United States, Iron Man beat the $100 million mark in its first week of release, grossing a total of $104.2 million (and averaging no less than $24,543 per screen). But the film also stormed the international box office, taking in a further $96.7 million in 57 countries, which brings its worldwide total up to $201 million after just five days!

Iron Man had the 10th biggest opening weekend of all-time (the fourth biggest among superhero movies). Among nonsequels it came in behind only Spider-Man ($114.8 million opening). The movie has also fallen well with the critics (currently 94% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes) and according to Entertainment Tonight, a sequel could soon get the greenlight for May 2010.

Artwork of Sam Jackson as Nick FuryMoviegoers attending screenings of Marvel’s new superhero flick Iron Man should note that there is a reason to remain sitting through the end credits.

Discussions between internet users posting their reactions to the film, which opened last Friday, have revealed that Samuel L. Jackson’s cameo appearance as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury was not cut from the film (as early reviews may have led to believe), but added onto the movie as an extra scene that plays after the final credits have passed.

You can read our critical assessment of the film at this link.

Iron MongerA strange set of new Iron Man images have found their way online via SuperHeroHype.

While the shots themselves (of admirable quality, but not of size) offer us our first glimpses at the spectacular Iron Man/Iron Monger showdown, each picture carries a huge watermark of the Paramount Pictures logo. With the website claiming it doesn’t know where their source has these pictures from, chances are that the images are stolen goods - and as such prone to disappear off the net soon. There’s no telling how long they will remain up so you may as well head over there as soon as possible to get your fix.

The anticipated comic book film opens in cinemas May 2.

The Impending Oil Crisis

quote I am a little leary of the situation. The truth will come out when, and if the US economy, and the dollar begins to strengthen. If prices remain high, you’ll know someone is lying. Either OPEC doesn’t have the supply they claim they have, or Analysts are incorrect when they say demand has decreased. Personally, I don’t buy the claim that demand has decreased. Population is ever increasing, so, the the demand should always be increasing. quote
