In the sixth installment (released November 21, 2008), Lord Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and Wizard worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching.

Last week’s official announcement that the adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is to be split into two films raised a couple of eyebrows: was it a decision based on artistic merit or the prospect of bigger business?
Empire had the chance to put producer David Heyman to the question. Interesting points revealed in the exclusive interview include that the split was decided right after the writers strike, that a single four-and-a-half hour movie might have been too long for younger viewers, that each of the two parts could run between two and two-and-a-half hours, that they’ve got a rough idea of where to end the first part but won’t know for sure until the first script is done, that both parts will be filmed back-to-back in a one year shoot starting in early 2009, and that Warner president Alan Horn left the decision whether to split the story entirely to the filmmakers.

The news has surfaced again that the final Harry Potter installment will indeed be split into two movies as rumoured.
Empire Magazine was thought to have debunked this myth in January, but today Variety has confirmed that Warner Bros. will “split the last Harry Potter tome into a two-part film, with the installments unspooling six months apart.”
David Yates will direct and Steve Kloves will write both parts, which will be filmed back to back. Part one of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will debut November 2010, with the second to follow in May 2011.

According to Snitchseeker.com, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince producer David Barron told Australia’s Herald Sun that a scene has been shot for the movie that doesn’t appear in J.K. Rowling’s original book:
‘But this was brought in because Jo (Rowling) was able throughout the quite lengthy book to keep dropping little snippets of what was happening in the outside world - there’d be people reading newspapers and talking about how somebody’s parents had been killed, or somebody had been withdrawn from school because their parents didn’t think it was safe.
And we’re making aware that the Muggle world is also experiencing these disasters, but thinks they are disasters rather than the work of Voldemort.

We’ve heard names like Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg attached to the director’s chair for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but now it seems that current director David Yates might just return for the final installment.
Young adult author Lois Lowry - who’s awaiting an adaptation of her book The Giver which Yates was rumoured to film - wrote on her official blog: Bad news from The Giver Movie front. David Yates, the director currently working on the next Harry Potter film, was supposed to begin The Giver film next. But he has just decided he wants to do the final Harry Potter first, thereby postponing The Giver by several years.
David Yates helmed last summer’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and is currently shooting the follow-up Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The seventh and final film has a tentative release date of sometime in 2010.

Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe told Digital Spy at the BAFTAs that there is no truth to rumours of Steven Spielberg directing the final film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:
‘I have no idea how that rumour started or where it came from. It’s not true. How’s that for a definitive answer? It’s absolute rubbish that Spielberg is directing the final film. It’s not true. There’s absolutely no foundation in that at all.’
Producer David Barron meanwhile told The Daily Telegraph that Deathly Hallows may be split into two films after all: ‘We are still discussing it. The announcement will be made hopefully in the not-too-distant future, with regards to the way seven shapes up.’

Richard Griffiths, the actor who plays Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films, told TeleText that none other than Steven Spielberg is a candidate for the director’s chair on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:
‘Being in a Spielberg film is a pretty good place to be. My agent had conversations with him, so anything is possible. I’m not in the sixth film so I want bigger roles. I asked JK Rowling if she could write Vernon a bigger part and she said ‘no’, so there you go.’
The final Potter film is scheduled for release in summer 2010.

British actor Timothy Spall told Moviehole that he will reprise his role as Peter Pettigrew aka Wormtail in the final two Harry Potter films:
‘I’m in the next one. I’m also in the one at the end – I have a very big scene in that. I think they might be shooting two of them back-to-back – hard to know though, what with this writers strike and all. They’re shooting the penultimate one at the moment – which I have a brief appearance in it. I should be doing that soon.’
Pettigrew previously had roles in Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince premieres in cinemas later this year in November, while Deathly Hallows is scheduled for 2010.

You probably won’t see this news go around on many websites, since news outlets usually don’t care about following up their stories, especially not once they’ve been debunked. See, the news is already passé and the fishing for new headlines must go on.
Thankfully, there are some exceptions. Empire for instance didn’t quite buy those rumours (started by a British tabloid) that crew currently working Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were told that the adaptation of the final book would be split into two movies. So they spoke with their contacts in the industry and, you guessed it, uncovered that there is absolutely no basis for talk of such a split at this stage.
Because currently, screenwriter Steve Kloves hasn’t even started work on the script for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and as Warner Bros. confirms, no decisions have been made about the seventh installment yet.
