Jack Black voicing a lazy Panda who unwittingly learns Kung Fu to save his peaceful valley: a recipe for genuine hilarity or tired jokes?
Kung Fu Panda tells the story of Po (voiced by an enigmatic Jack Black), a larger than life panda bear with even larger ambitions of becoming a legendary kung fu master. And thanks to one fateful day, his ambitions come true, but our hero finds himself reluctant when thrown into the face of danger.
The film works where many other children’s animation films fail. It is a heartwearming underdog tale that offers a strong moral, yes, but the difference lies in it’s style of humor. Throughout it’s entire 90-minute run time there isn’t a single pop-culture reference. This helps place focus on the physical comedy of the film (which is needed for a martial arts film), as well as give the film a more timeless feel.
Kung Fu Panda, thanks to its beautiful animation — most notably the 2-D opening sequence- and simple physical comedy, makes for one enjoyable experience for the entire family.
