Variety posted an insightful article on the future of Universal Pictures following the conclusion of the writers strike, as the studio looks to increase production and fasttrack existing franchises.
A key part of the report notes that recently, [Universal] landed Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon for a fourth “Bourne” movie, even though the director and star seemed ready to wrap it up after three pics.
The article also mentions that the studio is hoping to dissuade Guillermo del Toro from committing to the film version(s) of The Hobbit, as that would delay (by an estimated four years) him from starting production on At The Mountains of Madness , the director’s “dream project” that Universal bought the rights to and engaged del Toro to helm.
