‘The Golden Compass’ disappoints at box office

'The Golden Compass' theatrical one-sheetNew Line Cinema will be left worried over their $200 million investment The Golden Compass, after the film raked in just under $27 million on its opening weekend in the United States, despite topping the box office.

The tally falls short of the studio’s expectations ($30-40m) and it could now be more unsure than ever whether or not director Chris Weitz will get the green light to go ahead with the two planned sequels at all.

Producer Deborah Forte stresses that for that decision to be made, New Line would take the film’s worldwide taking into account. And The Golden Compass does seem to be faring better overseas, making $3.1m in the UK (beating Narnia’s record) and easily topping the charts in France, Spain and Germany.

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
