jamescameron.jpgThe Dominion Post reports that James Cameron has arrived in Wellington to shoot scenes for his epic $US200 million sci-fi adventure movie Avatar.

A secret Wellington location was revealed yesterday where 80 stuntpeople in camo gear were gathered for rehearsals.  According to the source,  men and women were split into gun-toting couples and learned how to provide covering fire for one another.  Apparently the action ‘included plenty of macho shouting and wide-legged posturing’.

James Cameron is shooting the movie using his revolutionary ‘Fusion’ 3D camera system which allows him to capture live action footage and motion capture performances in real time.  The cast of Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi, Zoe Saldana and Michelle Rodriguez will be joined by six ’synthespian’ actors created by FX outfit WETA.

Sylvester Stallone as John RamboLionsgate announced last week that they had changed the title of Sylvester Stallone’s new Rambo film from John Rambo to Rambo: To Hell and Back.

Negative reaction to this on Aint-it-cool-news‘ talkback prompted Stallone to phone the site’s administrator, Harry Knowles, to explain that he ‘was thinking that the title JOHN RAMBO was derivative of ROCKY BALBOA and might give people the idea that this is the last Rambo film’ - which needn’t be the case, according to Sly.

After a short discussion and Knowles’ counter-argument that ‘JOHN RAMBO meant less cartoonish and a commitment to making the franchise a real quality return to the character’, the actor-director seemingly agreed and promised: ‘Alright, that’s the title. JOHN RAMBO.’

Boba FettThe live-action Star Wars TV series goes into production in 2009, and all we really know about its content is that the story arc is set between Episode III and IV, and that none of the major characters from the films will feature.

Aint-it-cool-news now claims to have uncovered new details via a ‘highly trusted’ source, who has specified various characters set to appear on the show - including a Pod racer named Thall Joben (who was introduced in the Droid animated series), a straight-laced Rebel possibly related to Padmé (Luke and Leia’s mother), a Rebel General called Durron (Kyp’s dad?), a Mandalorian bad-ass (red flags, anyone?), a General Papanoida, Bib Fortuna, Oola and… an angsty and simmering Boba Fett in his twenties.

While we can’t vouch for the validity of the information, the fact that Star Wars creator George Lucas is reportedly visiting potential writers for the series in LA this week might lend at least a little credence to the report.

andrearothsmall.jpgAccording to TV Guide,  Andrea Roth is joining ABC’s Lost in a recurring role.

Roth has been cast as a ‘tough, non-nonsence and beautiful character in her mid 30s,  a therapist who has a tendancy to be overly controlling and obsessive.’

The Canadian actress is perhaps best known for her role as Janet Gavin, the put-upon wife of the lead character in Rescue Me.

karlurban.jpgAICN reports that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams might have found a ship’s doctor for the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Apparently Kiwi thesp Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Pathfinder) will be assuming the role made famous by DeForest Kelley in the original TV series.

If this news proves to be correct,  Urban will join Chris Pine (Kirk), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Anton Yelchin (Chekov), John Cho (Sulu) and Zoe Saldana (Uhuru) aboard the relaunched franchise. Eric Bana will play Romulan bad guy Nero.

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
