justiceleaguesmall11.jpgHollywood strikes have been looming for some time,  prompting studios to push back their schedules to accomodate the impending action.  However,  it now seems that the expected June 2008 action could come sooner than expected.

The New York Times is reporting that the Writers Guild of America could strike as soon as October 31st which would seriously hamper the development of many projects,  most notably Justice League.  The paper writes that movies such as JLA ‘are now being seen as high-value targets by those at the writers guild who advocate an immediate walkout should no deal be reached.’ adding ‘The question at hand is whether writers, in the event no deal is reached, can inflict maximum damage on their bargaining opponents by striking immediately rather than continuing to work and letting the studios add those films to their strike stockpile.’

hobbitbooksmall.jpgA History of the Hobbit,  the three-volume  collector’s boxed set released to mark the 70th anniversary of the book’s publication is now on sale.

The set includes for the first time the complete text of the original manuscript of The Hobbit alongside the definitive hardback edition of the book.  Like its successor,  The Lord of the Rings,  this is a story that ‘grew in the telling’, and many characters and story threads present in the published text were completely different when Tolkien first read his story aloud to his young sons as part of their fireside reads.

highlandersmall.jpgThe death of longtime Highlander producer William Panzer has left the future of the franchise in doubts reports SCI FI Wire.

‘Bill died this year, and so I don’t know what [Panzer's partner] Peter Davis is going to do with the franchise.’ said Adrian Paul, who played Duncan MacLeod in the TV show.  ‘I have heard, kind of through the industry, people say, ‘Oh, it’s a great franchise. It should be revamped. Somebody should buy it, blah, blah, blah.’ I have no idea. I don’t know what’s going to happen with that. Peter and Bill had two different parts of the franchise. Bill was the creative guy, if you like, and Peter was the financier, in a sense. So they had two [different] strengths, and I don’t know now what Peter will do with the franchise itself.’

Paul added that his future involvement in the franchise is also uncertain due to other commitments but mentioned that a new animated Highlander series is in the works,  aimed at a younger audience.

transformersonesheetsmall_thumbnail.jpgTransformers visual FX supervisor and second unit director Scott Farrar has told SCI FI Wire that the recently announced sequel will be visually more amitious.

‘We want to improve on some of the processes that we did.’ said Farrar. ‘I think what we’re going to do is get faster and know our problems sooner and quicker. And then, of course, I know Michael’s always thinking about new, crazy actions. And we’re open to that.  It’s a circus, and they’re going to raise the tight-wire walker a little bit higher next time.  But it’s all going to be dramatic. I think the commitment is not to just chuck out a sequel. The commitment is—and this makes us really happy here—that it’s a deep story. There are lots of layers to the story of all these Decepticons, everybody. And so they want to really keep the characters rich.’

Transformers is released on DVD and HD DVD October 16th.

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
