southlandstalesmall.jpgThe poster for Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales,  the follow-up to his cult hit Donnie Darko has arrived.  It’s also been confirmed that the long-delayed apocalyptic Sci-Fi epic will be released November 9th this year.

The theatrical release of the movie follows major editing of the film,  slashing down the running time by half an hour to two hours and 17 minutes following mixed reviews at Cannes.  The complex movie mixes elements of sci-fi, comedy, music and drama and is set in near-future Los Angeles on the eve of an unnamed disaster.

Southland Tales stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Seann William Scott, Mandy Moore, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Curtis Armstrong, Cheri Oteri, Justin Timberlake, Jon Lovitz, Bai Ling, Kevin Smith, Miranda Richardson and John Larroquette.   Click here to see the poster in our gallery.

totalrecallsmall.jpgWord has reached the net that a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 sci fi actioner Total Recall is on the cards.

Several years ago the Weinstein’s planned to make a sequel but with Arnold Schwarzenegger tied up in the world of politics the film never got off the starting blocks.  But as money talks in Hollywood and with the expensive rights to the movie burning a hole in the studio’s pocket,  a source at Moviehole suggests that a recalled Total Recall could be on its way in the ‘very near future’.

With the original movie still fresh in the minds of a large proportion of the ticket-buying public, this does seem like an odd idea,  but recognising that Arnie’s epic adventure was created on the cusp of the new digital FX age,  a remake could prove to be quite a spectacle.

kungfusmall.jpgAICN writes that Max Makowski,  the writer/director of Singaporean action comedy flick One Last Dance could be lined up to helm the Warner Bros. big-screen adaptation of cult ‘70s TV series Kung Fu.

The project is due to kick off in China in March with the production still looking for their leading man to take the role made famous by David Carradine in the original TV show.  The casting team are looking for a male aged 20-35 with a handsome mix of Chinese/Asian and Western characteristics. The actor should have ‘the emotional capacity of a young Clint Eastwood’ in addition to being ‘charismatic and charming’.

The original TV show was set in the American old west and followed the adventures of a Shaolin monk called Kwai Chang Caine, who used his martial arts skills to seeks his long lost half-brother, Danny Caine.  Previous attempts at transferring the franchise to the big screen include Kung Fu:The Movie (1986) and Kung Fu:The Next Generation (1987) starring Brandon Lee. A tentative 2008 release date is suggested.

dodsmall.jpgWeinstein Co. have snapped up the North American and Mexican rights to George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead for $2 to $2.5 million says the Hollywood Reporter.

The fifth sequel to Romero’s 1968 landmark chiller Night of the Living Dead is now destined for a theatrical run after several direct-to-DVD offers were rejected.

The story centres around a group of film students who when making a horror movie in the woods discover that the dead have begun to revive.  Turning on their cameras they record the real-life horrors that suddenly confront them, creating a first person diary of their bloody encounters and the disintegration of everything they hold dear.  Told with Romero’s pitch-black humor and an unflinching eye on our post-Katrina world, Diary of the Dead marks the noted filmmaker’s return to his roots. Starring Michelle Morgan, Josh Close, Shawn Roberts, Scott Wentworth, Amy Lalonde and Joe Dinicol. An Artfire Films/Romero-Grunwald Production produced by Peter Grunwald, Artur Spigel, Sam Englebardt and Ara Katz. Executive Producers are Dan Fireman, John Harrison and Steve Barnett.

johnrambosmall.jpgLionsgate have set a release date for Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo which will hit cinemas January 25th 2008.

The latest chapter in the violent saga centers on a group of Christian aid workers in Thailand who recruit Rambo to guide them up the Salween River to deliver medical supplies to the Karen tribe of neighboring Burma (aka Myanmar).  When the missionaries fail to return, Rambo is persuaded to take a group of mercenaries back into the war-torn border region to find them. What follows is a descent into hell on earth.

With more creatures than the Star Wars cantina, Hellboy and his cohorts set about trying to stop an Elf prince from destroying the human race. Hey, it’s all in a day’s work for Big Red.

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
