Actor Keanu Reeves has signed on to star in Scott Derrickson’s (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still for 20th Century Fox, reports Variety.
Reeves will play Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar. Michael Rennie played Klaatu in the 1951 original directed by Robert Wise, and plans are to update it using the latest advances in visual effects technology.
The production is looking at a late fall or early 2008 start as a planned tentpole for the studio.

During press for his new film In The Valley of Elah, Oscar-winner Paul Haggis (Crash, Casino Royale) spoke about his James Bond and the upcoming one he’s scripting for director Marc Forster.
ComingSoon.net has the quotes: ‘My Bond is an actual assassin; when he kills someone, he kills them with a knife, they’re bloody and he pays a price. He denies that he pays a price, but he does. When he sees a woman who witnesses something horrific, and he sees her taking a shower, he doesn’t just go in there and f*ck her, like the old Bond would have done. He sits there with her, and she says, ‘I can’t get this blood from my fingernails.’ So he helps her get the blood from her fingernails; that’s what he does, that’s my Bond. So it’s a different guy; it’s a guy who’s much more like these guys, these heroes (in ‘Valley of Elah’).’
Haggis refused to say much about Bond 22, but teased with the following comment: ‘It picks up 2 minutes after the last one, and it’s going to be fun.’ Haggis also denied rumours that Carice van Houten (Black Book) would star as one of the Bond girls: ‘She’s great, isn’t she – but she’s not going to be in this one.’
