Neil Gaiman’s ‘Neverwhere’Writer Neil Gaiman (Stardust, Beowulf) revealed to MTV that Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night director David Slade is set to direct a big screen adaptation of his Neverwhere.

Neverwhere was developed as a TV series by Gaiman and Lenny Henry in 1996, and then Gaiman adapted the story into a novel on the set. The novel was adapted into a comic book by Mike Carey and Glenn Fabry in 2005.

Apparently, studio mogul Harvey Weinstein is interested. ‘They’re using my script from 2000, and they want me to polish it up a bit,’ said Gaiman.

‘The Invasion’ theatrical posterWarner Bros. Pictures has released six clips of the sci-fi thriller The Invasion, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig and opening in cinemas this Friday (August 17):

In the film, the mysterious crash of a space shuttle leads to the terrifying discovery that there is something alien within the wreckage. Those who come in contact with it are changing in ominous ways. Soon psychiatrist Carol Bennell (Kidman) and her friend, Dr. Ben Driscoll (Craig), learn the truth about the growing extraterrestrial epidemic: it attacks its victims while they sleep, leaving them physically unchanged but strangely unfeeling and inhuman. Carol’s only hope is to stay awake long enough to find her son, who may hold the key to stopping the invasion.

Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’Pathé and the BBC will jointly fund a $50 million live-action movie based on Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, reports Variety.

It will be directed by BBC natural-history filmmaker John Downer from a script by Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle. Downer has previous experience with filming wild animals and using CGI manipulation to make them appear to talk - his lion drama-documentary Pride got nominated for an Emmy in 2004. Production starts in September and will take two years.

Kipling’s Jungle Books tell the story of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves. He’s kidnapped by monkeys and rescued by his animal friends, including Baloo the Bear, Bagheera the panther and Kaa the python. But when it comes to fighting the tiger Sher Khan, Mowgli must do that on his own.

caspiansmall.jpgHoward Berger, Prince Caspian creature FX supervisor has told SCI FI Wire that fans can expect to see a more diverse array of Narnians in the upcoming second installment of The Chronicles of Narnia franchise.

‘There’s all different looks,’ said Berger. ‘We’ve got female dwarves, male dwarves, old and young. It’s really fun to mix it up. We wanted to have old-age fawns … and heavyset characters and black centaurs. One of the guys designed an old-age fawn that I really liked, and it looked like David Niven. So right now we’re trying to find an extra or an actor who has kind of a very slender, older body. But he looks just like David Niven, so I really like that. Then we hopefully have a big heavyset fawn who’s kind of John Goodman-ish. So we kind of designed stuff around that. And then we have a really old, old centaur that we’re going to do as well that’s kind of like Little Big Man centaur. There are kid centaurs, too.’

hobbitsmall.jpgHarperCollins’ Voyager Books have announced the release of a new edition of the Tolkien classic The Hobbit to mark the 70th anniversary of its original publication. The new edition includes Tolkien’s two-colour fold-out maps, black and white line drawings and colour paintings.

In addition, Voyager are also releasing a three-volume collector’s boxed set which includes for the first time the complete text of the original manuscript of The Hobbit alongside the definitive hardback edition of the book. Like its successor, The Lord of the Rings, this is a story that ‘grew in the telling’, and many characters and story threads present in the published text were completely different when Tolkien first read his story aloud to his young sons as part of their fireside reads.

starwarsatlassmall.jpgIn his blog,  author Daniel Wallace has revealed details about his upcoming book Star Wars: The Essential Atlas (working title),  due out in 2008 from Del Rey.

‘This book, written by myself and Jason Fry, will be the deepest look Lucasfilm has ever allowed into the geography of our favorite galaxy far, far away,’ Wallace writes. ‘There’s lots more still to do on this project — and our draft could still undergo heavy rewrites — so take everything with a grain of salt at this early date. But I thought it would be a good idea to address some of the questions that I’ve been getting.’

The Impending Oil Crisis

quote I am a little leary of the situation. The truth will come out when, and if the US economy, and the dollar begins to strengthen. If prices remain high, you’ll know someone is lying. Either OPEC doesn’t have the supply they claim they have, or Analysts are incorrect when they say demand has decreased. Personally, I don’t buy the claim that demand has decreased. Population is ever increasing, so, the the demand should always be increasing. quote
