hdlogosmall1.jpgFollowing the blow dealt to the HD DVD format by Blockbuster’s allegience to Blu-Ray, it seems that the Sony-backed format is gearing up to attack its rival again. Digi Times reports that the Blu-ray camp are set to give away five free disks to anyone who buys a new Blu-ray player or a PlayStation 3 console. While the list of movies on offer is hardly awe-inspiring, it certainly tilts the table again in Blu-ray’s favour.

Meanwhile, Amazon and Microsoft have revealed a plan to boost the HD-DVD format by releasing high-def versions of independent films in the format. The new CustomFlix DVD On Demand service allows the retailer to burn an HD-DVD copy of a film upon ordering, allowing Amazon to boost its selection with indie features that can’t justify a commercial production run. Amazon expects to have a thousand movies available through the service.

dirtydozensmall.jpgVariety reports that writer-director Zak Penn is rewriting a remake of The Dirty Dozen for Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver.

Penn’s screen credits include X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four and Elektra. He also wrote, produced and directed The Grand, which is being distributed by Anchor Bay, and made his directing debut on the 2004 pic Incident at Loch Ness.

The original Dirty Dozen (1967) was a war film directed by Robert Aldrich from the novel by E.M. Nathanson. Starring Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Telly Savalas, Charles Bronson, and NFL Hall of Famer-turned-actor Jim Brown. The plot involved the recruitment of twelve American soldiers, all general convicts convicted of capital offences including murder, desertion, robbery and rape, and sentenced to either execution or long terms of imprisonment. The soldiers are trained and eventually ordered to destroy an assigned target, the identity of which remains secret.

cloverrfieldsmall1.jpgFollowing the release of a teaser trailer attached to Transformers and the launch of the mysterious site at 1-18-08.com, the Cloverfield project continues to generate interest through what looks to be the start of a clever marketing campaign.

Shocktillyoudrop reports that the ‘Untitled J.J. Abrams Project’ now has an additional two websites dedicated to someone called Ethan Haas - one entitled EthanHaaswasright.com, the other, EthanHaaswaswrong.blogspot.com. The latter drives you to a blog that spends most of its time disspelling rumors while the former challenges you with a puzzle. Memorize the movement of the puzzle pieces and you’ll be taken to raw video footage with a special message.

In addition to this, the Hollywood Reporter says that  filming began in New York in mid-June. The cast includes Michael Stahl-David, Odet Jasmin, Mike Vogel and Lizzy Kaplan.

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
