spidermansmall.jpgVariety reports that although Spider-Man 3 has been shattering box office records left, right and centre, there’s one figure that it seems unlikely to exceed:  biggest opening week ever.

As of yesterday, Spider-Man 3 had pulled in an estimated $176.1 million but with precious little time left to make up the numbers, it looks like the $196 million first week figure record scored by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest will remain intact.

The webslinging superhero has just one more weekend left to capitalise on it’s relatively weak box office competition before a grumpy green ogre stomps into multiplexes under the banner of Shrek the Third.

piratessmall.jpgIGN reports that Australia’s biggest selling daily newspaper the Herald Sun, after screening eight scenes from the still unfinished Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, siezed the opportuniy to quiz Jerry Bruckheimer about the future of the swashbuckling franchise.

This is the end,’ said Bruckheimer, ‘This is the end of the trilogy.”

When asked if there could be a possibility of a spin-off movie featuring just Captain Jack Sparrow, the veteran producer said ‘Whether there will be another movie depends on whether we can create something new and different, but this is the end,‘  adding, ‘but whether one of the characters or a couple of the characters continue on, it’s a possibility. … Certainly, in a moment at the end of the film there is a hope that something else might happen.’

JimHillMedia.com reports that Johnny Depp has told Walt Disney Studios that he’d be willing to reprise the role of Capt. Jack Sparrow which is why the House of Mouse has already tentatively made plans to shoot Pirates 4 in 2009.

elirothsmall.jpgClarifying reports that Eli Roth has been pestering Edgar Wright to team-up for a Grindhouse sequel, the Hostel director spoke to SCI FI Wire at the Saturn Awards and shared some information about his new project.

Rather than a sequel to the Tarantino/Rodruigez double-header, Roth is developing a film called Trailer Trash, which will be made up entirely of fake trailers for nonexistent films.  Roth of course contributed the slasher flick trailer Thanksgiving to Grindhouse.

‘I want to make a movie like Borat or Jackass or that kind of movie that’s literally just completely ridiculous, totally silly and absurd, that’s just all fake trailers,‘ Roth said ‘And I have a great way to tie it all together and make it so it’s narrative. … I have a genius way to tie it all together so that it will actually play like a movie.’

heroessmall.jpgJapanese-born Masi Oka, who plays Hiro in NBC’s Heroes, has told SCI FI Wire what they can expect from the upcoming season finale of the popular show..

‘I think it’s great the way the finale ends,‘ said Oka ‘It’s a wrapping up of volume one, which is [called] ‘Genesis.’ And it wraps up the whole bomb storyline. So it’s a nice finale, and there’s a great cliffhanger with everybody, I would say. And you do get to see a little bit of volume two, which is called ‘Generations.”

kateesackhoffsmall.jpgBattlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff has told SCI FI Wire that she will play the original cyborg and femme fatale in NBC’s reimagining of the 1970s TV show The Bionic Woman. Sackhoff, who plays Starbuck in Battlestar, will star in series opposite British actress Michelle Ryan, who plays Jamie Sommers.

‘I play Sarah Corvus,’ Sackhoff said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles on May 10. ‘She’s the original bionic woman. The first bionic woman. She doesn’t let anyone forget it. And she’s kind of gone off the reservation. She’s a little crazy.’

Sackhoff revealed that her character will have two bionic arms, ‘both legs, two eyes, one ear, part of my chest.’

'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' theatrical one-sheetThe news is certainly not unexpected, but very much appreciated: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has been rated PG-13, according to Warner’s new Dumbledore’s Army website.

The film’s predecessor, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, had been the first of the film adaptations to achieve the higher age rating. The step up from PG to PG-13 of course reflects the maturing nature of the series over the course of its individual installments.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is released in cinemas July 13.

Battlestar GalacticaBattlestar Galactica leads Edward James Olmos and Katee Sackhoff apparently revealed to The IESB at last night’s Saturn Awards that the critically-acclaimed show will conclude when its fourth season, which starts airing in January 2008, ends.

Olmos said: ‘This will probably be the most extraordinary season of ‘Battlestar’. It’s the final season, so it’s definitely going to be the most vicious. As far as we know, in respects of the way we have this show constructed, this is the final season.’

Meanwhile Sackhoff, who plays Starbuck on the series, commented: ‘I think part of the problem is that it’s an expensive show. It is [a great show], but we don’t have the viewership that a great show should get.’

kenwatnabesmall.jpgSuperheroHype reports that rumours circulating for the past few months that Oscar-nominated Japanese actor Ken Watanabe would play the role of the Silver Samurai in the Wolverine spinoff movie are false.

When asked by ComingSoon.net during an interview about his Japanese drama Memories of Tomorrow the Watanabe said ‘You know, I did two hard movies recently: Memories of Tomorrow and Letters From Iwo Jima, and they were something I gave everything to as an actor, so I’m a bit wiped out right now, and so I can’t find the next film.’

The 48-year-old actor played the part of the Ra’s al Ghul decoy in the 2005 film Batman Begins and The Chairman in the film version of the best selling Arthur Golden novel, Memoirs of a Geisha.

Malcolm McDowellRotten Tomatoes has quotes of Heroes star Malcolm McDowell discussing  taking over the role of Dr. Loomis in the new Halloween, directed by Rob Zombie: ‘I’ve signed for three. How about that? They obviously think it’s going to be a big hit.’

McDowell hasn’t seen any of the Halloween films, and apparently Zombie told him not to bother: ‘It’s a new look, it’s a reinvention of it and he is completely different, my Loomis, I presume. So I guess there will be some people that will be sort of disappointed if they think I’m just going to copy [Donald Pleasence] because I’m not.’

Halloween is scheduled for release August 31.

The Impending Oil Crisis

quote I am a little leary of the situation. The truth will come out when, and if the US economy, and the dollar begins to strengthen. If prices remain high, you’ll know someone is lying. Either OPEC doesn’t have the supply they claim they have, or Analysts are incorrect when they say demand has decreased. Personally, I don’t buy the claim that demand has decreased. Population is ever increasing, so, the the demand should always be increasing. quote
