USA Today has published an article that previews Jon Favreau’s adaptation of the Iron Man comic due out in May 2008.
Favreau is quoted as saying: ’We didn’t want to just go with a safe choice. The best and worst moments of Robert’s life have been in the public eye. He had to find an inner balance to overcome obstacles that went far beyond his career. That’s Tony Stark. Robert brings a depth that goes beyond a comic-book character who is having trouble in high school, or can’t get the girl. Plus, he’s simply one of the best actors around.’
Included is the first still from the film, which depicts Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Click here to load it in our movie gallery.

Variety reports that Baldwin Entertainment Group has signed Chuck Russell to direct the action-adventure movie Mandrake, based on the Hearst comic book character.
Mandrake the Magician is a syndicated U.S. comic strip created in 1934 by Lee Falk about a crime-fighting illusionist whose work is based on an impossibly fast hypnotic technique. In the long-running strip, stMandrake is accompanied by perhaps the first black comic book hero, a character called Lothar, Prince of the Seven Nations.
The strip has never been officially adapted for film, but a 12 part serial created in 1939 starring Warren Hull as Mandrake and Al Kikume as Lothar is widely available on DVD.

Work on a special DVD set for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner, rumoured to include the director’s ‘final cut’ of the film, began in 2000 - years after Scott had publicly stated that he was unhappy with the rushed director’s cut released in 1992. Legal issues and other hindrances have stopped the new disc set from being released until it was announced that the film would finally be coming out as multi-disc box set sometime in 2007 to celebrate Blade Runner’s 25th anniversary.
Some surprising news was now revealed on the website of actress Joanna Cassidy, who played the replicant Zhora in the film: ‘Joanna has just finished re-shooting her scenes from the original BLADE RUNNER movie. Joanna is wearing her original outfit (which she kept over from the first production). These new scenes will be part of the upcoming special BLADE RUNNER DVD re-release. Check back for more details.’

What looks to be the international poster for Michael Bay’s upcoming blockbuster Transformers has gone online on Aint-it-cool-news.
The poster reuses the big robot eye image from the teaser poster, but instead of ominously overlooking the planet globe it now watches over a city bathed in smoke. Such imagery, perhaps a little reminiscent of 9/11, may have been deemed insensitive for the US market, which might explain why it seems to be put on display only internationally.

According to Variety, David Goyer will write and direct Magneto, the X-Men spinoff in development at Fox and Marvel that will center on the villain played in the movies by Ian McKellan.
With the big financial success of the three X-Men films, the studios hatched plans to create spinoff movies that would delve into the backstories of some of the series’ major characters. Magneto is the second such project to go into production.
The first will be Wolverine (with Hugh Jackman reprising his role) from a David Benioff script, with a director soon to be attached.
