'The Golden Compass' ShoWest teaser posterThe very first teaser poster for The Golden Compass is on display at the ShoWest motion picture industry convention (which opened today), and IESB.net managed to get a photo of it.

The artwork features the glowingly-lit alethiometer with the tagline ‘It is the alethiometer. It tells the truth. As for how to read it, you’ll have to learn by yourself.’ The text is a direct quote from the book. You can view the poster here in our gallery, along with plenty more pictures from the anticipated movie.

Frank MillerFrank Miller has been one of the greatest influences on the graphic novel genre, so much that his work has also resulted in (now) two very successful movie adaptations: Sin City and 300. It’s obvious that more of his work could potentially be in line to receive a film treatment, but it seems Frank Miller doesn’t want that getting out of (his) hand.

Promoting the release of 300 (directed by Zack Snyder), Miller told The Telegraph: ‘This, I hope, will be the last property of mine that isn’t directed by me.’ Miller had co-directed the Sin City adaptation together with Robert Rodriguez and is scheduled to do so again on the upcoming sequel.

Lost Boys director schumachersmall.jpgJoel Schumacher has been speaking with the Ottowa Citizen about his return to the world of the undead with Town Creek.

It’s about Hitler and Himmler and Goebbels’ association with the occult — this is what they based the Master Race on… the one thing about the Nazis is that they so loved themselves that they documented everything, and there are these great documentaries on Hitler’s obsession with the occult. So it’s a ‘horror’ movie based on that by a very intelligent young writer‘ said Schumacher.

The veteran director went on to explain that the first half of the movie is set in 1936 at the height of Hitler’s power, whilst the second half will be set during the present day and will deal with ghosts of the past rising up to confront today’s world. Town Creek will be lensed from a script by Dave Kajganich with Jesse Metcalfe and Joy McBrinn as confirmed cast members.

megatroncgi_lead.jpgShia LaBeouf, star of Michael Bay’s Transformers has told SCI FI Wire that executive producer Steven Spielberg had to appeal a decision by the MPAA to give the film an R rating. ‘Spielberg fought back and got the PG-13,‘ said LaBeouf. ‘It’s just because of the intensity. There are not a lot of breathers. It’s like whoosh!

La Beouf said that an early cut of the film earned an R rating simply because it was so suspenseful. ‘We went to get our MPAA rating, and this movie is for the masses, and we got an R rating because of the tension, not because of the curse words or nudity, but for sheer intensity. It’s aneurysm-inducing.’

300poster_lead.jpgVariety reports that the 300 has defied lukewarm crtitical reception to score a victory at the weekend box office.

The Warner Bros pic made an incredible $70 million at the US box office over the weekend, and has made the the third biggest R-rated opener ever, coming in behind The Matrix Reloaded and The Passion of the Christ. Tracking data had forecast the movie at just $40 million.

Imax boss Greg Foster pointed out that the stylized battle pic had been targeted at the fanboy crowd. ‘We’ve been cultivating the techie crowd of 15- to 24-year-olds who play videogames and watch DVDs’ he said. ‘It’s a (demographic) that’s difficult to get (to theaters), but we finally nailed them.’

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
