Maggie GyllenhaalNearly a month ago Latino Review claimed that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to replace fellow actress Katie Holmes in The Dark Knight, Chris Nolan’s upcoming sequel to 2005’s Batman Begins.

Variety has now confirmed that Gyllenhaal is in final talks for the role of Rachel Dawes, which means she is as good as officially on board. The Dark Knight will start filming in late spring or in summer, for a summer 2008 release.

Angelina JolieAccording to Variety, Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima) is set to direct The Changeling next, a film based on a script by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski. Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie is in talks to star.

She would play a woman who’s son gets abducted. But when the boy is retrieved, she suspects that it is not her child and goes to confront corruption in the LAPD. The story is based on true events in 1920s Los Angeles. The project was originally intended for Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code) to direct. Eastwood took over because Howard will be busy filming Angels & Demons.

entsmall.jpgResidents of Moseley in the United Kingdom have branded a planned J.R.R. Tolkien memorial ‘an eyesore’.

The proposed installation of the $137k stainless steel sculpture of Treebeard the Ent, modelled by the writer’s great nephew Tim Tolkien has caused locals to sign a petition objecting to the ‘absurd idea’. Residents claim that the statue would be ‘out of proportion’ and an ‘oversized eyesore’ in its natural surroundings, as well as a target for vandals. Permission for the erection of the walking tree has been granted by Birmingham City Council and scheduled for May 2007.

Although J.R.R. Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State (now part of South Africa), he spent his formative years in the midlands city. Artist Tim Tolkien has designed several monumental sculptures including the award-winning Sentinel at the Castle Vale estate in Birmingham.

dawntreadersmall.jpgMoviehole reports that Walden Media and Disney plan to begin shooting The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader almost as soon as production on Prince Caspian wraps. However, with key crew busy finishing the current production, it seems that the next chapter in the Chronicles of Narnia will be getting a new director. According to the report, Neil Burger (The Illusionist) has been approached to shoot the third Narnia installment and replace Andrew Adamson.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, originally published in 1952, features the characters of Lucy and Edmund Pevensie and Prince Caspian, so understandably there is some urgency on the part of the producers to start filming as soon as possible before the youngsters outgrow the roles.

jedivssithsmall.jpgDel Rey Books are set to expand their Essential Guide series with Star Wars: Jedi vs. Sith — The Essential Guide to the Force.

The book, by author Ryder Windham, will explore the nature of the Force through insightful narratives supplied from some of the foremost Sith and Jedi scholars from a galaxy far, far away. The book will include information on the myriad ways to contemplate and use the Force, wield a lightsaber and even on how to tread the path of the dark side and study the secrets of the Sith.

The book is illustrated throughout by Tommy Lee Edwards and Chris Trevas. It is due out in November 2007.

WATCHMENSMALL.jpgAICN have published a test shot of Rorshach, the inkblot mask-wearing hero from the upcoming Zack Snyder-helmed Watchmen movie.

The R-rated project is being adapted from the twelve-issue graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. Watchmen is the only graphic novel to win a Hugo Award and the only one to appear on Time magazine’s 2005 list of ‘the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present.’

Watchmen is set in an alternative 1985, where the US is on the verge on nuclear conflict with the Soviet Union. It tells the story of a group of past and present superheroes and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own. Watchmen depicts superheroes as real people who must confront ethical and personal issues, who struggle with neuroses and failings, and who - with one notable exception - lack anything recognizable as super powers.

shazamsmall.jpgThe Hollywood Reporter has revealed that John August has been hired to pen Shazam!, New Line Cinema’s adaptation of the DC Comics series with Peter Segal attached as director.

The comic book was created in 1939 by artist C.C. Beck and writer Bill Parker and focuses on Billy Batson, a teenager who becomes the superhero known as Captain Marvel (not to be confused with the Marvel version) when he utters the magic word ‘Shazam!’ The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

‘It’s a unique opportunity to do a comic book movie where the character in it actually read comic books,’ said August, ‘What’s terrific about the character is that he looks like this superstudly superhero but is really a 13-year-old boy. And to approach everything that is great about a superhero movie from a 13-year-old boy’s perspective was a unique way in.’

trekxismall11.jpgContinuing the trend of taking franchise movie titles back to basics (Rocky Balboa, John Rambo), the next Trek movie will simply be called Star Trek. It’s safe to assume that the new team behind the feature, led by J.J. Abrams, see this very much as a reboot for the tired series with the title reflecting their intention to distance themselves from earlier chapters.

The title was unveiled by writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci during an interview with MTV.com. The duo also unsurprisingly revealed that the movie ‘will take place aboard a starship’ and Kurtzman added ‘I’m the hugest Matt Damon fan ever. If he became [Kirk], great.’ He then went on to say ‘There will be more action in this movie than any Trek that’s preceded it.’

Star Trek is slated for a Christmas 2008 theatrical release.

bigfootsmall.jpgNew Line has purchased the rights to David Gilcreast’s spec script Cryptozoologists reports Variety.

The story revolves around a group of scientists who track mythical creatures such as Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster and have to deal with the sudden appearance of the creatures in San Francisco. Coincidentally, the news comes hot on the heels of yesterday’s report that Universal has purchased the film right for the Nick Redfern novel Three Men Seeking Monsters, which is similarly themed.

The Impending Oil Crisis

quote I am a little leary of the situation. The truth will come out when, and if the US economy, and the dollar begins to strengthen. If prices remain high, you’ll know someone is lying. Either OPEC doesn’t have the supply they claim they have, or Analysts are incorrect when they say demand has decreased. Personally, I don’t buy the claim that demand has decreased. Population is ever increasing, so, the the demand should always be increasing. quote
