Das Parfüm is a bestselling novel by German writer Patrick Süsskind, and where I grew up, everyone knows of it, and at least half of everyone has read it. In fact, it is one of the most famous and popular books written in the German language. Over twenty years after its publication, the exciting young filmmaker Tom Tykwer (who directed Run, Lola, Run, one of the most innovative German films of the last decade) has dared to bring Süsskind’s “unfilmable” novel to the screen starring an international cast - and the result is marvellous.

The Writers Guild of America has announced its nominees for the best original and best adapted screenplays of the year. Remarkable is the strong representation of comedies (half of the nominees) across both categories, and the fact that none of the writers has been nominated previously.
Up for best original screenplay are Guillermo Arriaga (Babel), Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine), Peter Morgan (The Queen), Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) and Paul Greengrass (United 93). The contenders for best adapted screenplay are Sacha Baron Cohen et al. Warner Bros. has acquired the film rights on a book detailing the polonium-210 poisoning of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, who right before his death blamed Russian president Vladimir Putin’s regime for the murder, for Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil to develop, according to Variety.
Depp has reportedly been following the matter, which received ample coverage in the media, and could potentially star in the film himself. His current arrangement at Infinitum Nihil gives him the possibility to play a leading role in any film acquired by his company.

Jason Isaacs, the British actor who plays the villainous Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, has told SCI FI Wire that he’ll have a lot more to do in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
“I had virtually nothing to do in number four,” Isaacs said “In fact, when there’s nothing to do like that, and they say, ‘Do you want to come in for a couple of weeks?’ you go, ‘Well, I’m busy. Oh, God. All right.’ Because the thought that somebody else might wear my wig is just too painful. But I have a little bit more to do in this.”

Best selling author Philip Pullman is to be awarded the Freedom of Oxford for his literary work at a ceremony in Oxford later this month reports the Oxford Mail.
Describing Oxford as his “inspiration”, Pullman joins a list of just five modern-day recipients of the ancient honour. The medieval term ‘freeman’ originally meant someone who was not the property of a feudal lord, but enjoyed privileges such as the right to earn money and own land. Town dwellers who were protected by the charter of their town or city were often free - hence the term ‘freedom of the City’.
“I am delighted and honoured to receive the Freedom of Oxford, the city which has been the inspiration for a great deal of my work.” said the author, “Oxford is a city that is steeped in storytelling”.
Pullman was born in Norwich in 1946, and educated in England, Zimbabwe, and Australia, before his family settled in North Wales. He currently lives in the village of Cumnor in Oxfordshire.

Pre-orders for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final episode of J.K. Rowling’s immensely popular series of books have been as strong as expected. In Britain, huge interest had pushed the book to the top of the best seller list of online retailer Amazon and, last month, the Royal Mail was hiring extra delivery vehicles for when the book goes on sale.
Meanwhile, the film adaptation of the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has a scheduled release date of July 13, 2007.

Battlestar Galactica executive producers David Eick and Ron Moore have been discussing the proposed DVD movie in an interview with the Chicago Tribune.
“There’s been a great deal of interest within the company [NBC Universal] about how to expand the ‘Battlestar’ universe. One of the things we’re preparing right now is a 2-hour movie that will be an adjunct to the fourth season.” said Eick.
“It’s really a bonus episode.” added Moore, “It’s not really official. [NBCU] home video is very interested, the DVDs of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ do very well. At this point we’re talking about what the story would be, how the logistics of it would work [in terms of when it would be shot]. It’s a lot of vague talk right now because we don’t have an order for a fourth season. Until there is a fourth season, the DVD release won’t be something concrete either”.
