Daniel Craig is Lord Asriel

Daniel CraigVariety is reporting that New Line has signed British actor Daniel Craig (Layer Cake, Munich) to play the much speculated about role of Lord Asriel in The Golden Compass, director Chris Weitz’s adaptation of the first installment in the His Dark Materials trilogy. Rumours had previously been abound that Paul Bettany was in the front line for the role, but the reports were denied a week ago by New Line. Craig joins his second big franchise (his character plays an important role over the entire trilogy, albeit slightly less in the second book) after having taken on the mantle as the new James Bond. In The Golden Compass, he will star alongside Nicole Kidman (Mrs. Coulter) and catch-up with Casino Royale Bond girl Eva Green (Serafina Pekkala).

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
