Warner Bros. Pictures has just supplied the X-Realms with six brand new shots from The Golden Compass. We reported last week that the official website for the movie had gone live, and that it featured lots of new images. However, those shots are mostly cropped and built into the site’s layout, making them pretty to look at but less easy to save and/or print.
The six new images today are actual film stills, and the first of their kind from the anticipated adaptation of Philip Pullman’s first His Dark Materials novel by director Chris Weitz. They offer a good look at the film’s main characters: Mrs. Coulter (played by Nicole Kidman), Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), and the story’s heroine Lyra Belacqua (newcomer Dakota Blue Richards).

Little Miss Sunshine is one of the most talked about indie films of the year. It won the World Cinema Audience award at the Sydney Film Festival, and got a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, prompting Fox Searchlight to secure the film’s distribution rights for a staggering $10 million, one of the biggest deals in the latter festival’s history. Remarkably, Little Miss Sunshine is the first venture into the cinema film business of the husband-and-wife director team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who have long made their claim to fame directing some of the most stunning music videos of the last fifteen years for bands like R.E.M., the Smashing Pumpkins and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

There’s an interview in the LA Times with Tobey Maguire in which the Spiderman actor discusses the upcoming Spiderman 3 and the origin of the black goo: “Basically, there’s the goo, right? The symbiote which has, like, a dark energy, like the goo from the thing that creates Venom.”
Realizing how confusing that might sound to someone less familiar with the comic, Maguire continued: “(Venom is) a very, very popular character from the later Spider-Man comics. He has the same kind of attributes that Spider-Man has, but he’s just stronger, faster and more vicious than Spider-Man. And it comes from this goo that comes from outer space, so first the goo comes and gets hold of me.”

The BBC reports that the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood has been commissioned for a second season. The series starring the time-travelling Captain Jack (John Barrowman) was so successful it broke BBC Three’s ratings record, it also drew the largest audience for a non-sport programme on digital TV. The second season of the sci-fi thriller will be aired on BBC Two.
Created by the writer of the new Doctor Who Russell T Davies, Torchwood (an anagram of Doctor Who) is produced by BBC Wales in Cardiff, where the series is set. The storyline follows a team of modern day investigators as they use alien technology to solve crime, both alien and human.
