MGM studio chairman and chief exec Harry Sloan gave a small update on their plans of bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit to the big screen speaking to the European Media Leaders Summit in London, according to Variety.

The second, meanwhile, would be based on ”footnotes and source material connecting The Hobbit with Lord of the Rings.” Sloan couldn’t give a starting date for the project, though an MGM spokesperson told Variety that production isn’t expected to get underway until 2008 or 2009.

That’ll include a new femme fatale and other characters.” Rumour has it that Rodriguez has approached Angelina Jolie about playing Ava, an ex-lover of Clive Owen’s character Dwight.
