Helena Bonham CarterAccording to Variety, Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club, Big Fish) has been cast in the role of the diabolical meat pie maker Mrs. Lovett in the upcoming adaptation of the musical Sweeney Todd, which will be directed by her husband Tim Burton and starts shooting in early next year.

Carter will star alongside Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G, Borat), although the involvement of the latter is at this point still subject to confirmation by Dream Works or Warner.

Mrs. Lovett, a role originated onstage by Angela Lansbury, is a murderess who dispenses her victims’ bodies in meat pies and becomes the amorous accomplice of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

naomiwattssmall.jpgAccording to TMZ.COM, Universal are ready to attach a star name to The Birds. Apparently the studio is keen to sign British born actress Naomi Watts (The Ring, King Kong).

The movie is an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s book which was famously adapted for the silver screen in 1963 by Alfred Hitchcock. The author was very unhappy with Hitchcock’s vision but the new version will apparently stay much closer to the original short story first published in a compilation called The Birds and other Stories. In the book the birds become hostile after a harsh winter with little food, first the seagulls, then birds of prey and finally even small birds, all turn against mankind. According to IGN, Stiles White and Juliet Snowden are scripting the project which is already a year into development.

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
