SpaceballsEven though Mel Brooks’ Star Wars (and Star Trek, Planet of the Apes etc.) satire Spaceballs earned “only” $38.1m at the US box office when it was released in 1987, it has since become not only a cult favorite, but also a big money maker through video and DVD sales and sale to cable and pay TV nets. MGM, who is currently trying to get back in shape, has now commissioned an animated series based on the Spaceballs movie and sold exclusive rights in the U.S. to Comcast’s G4 cable network, according to Variety.

Encompassing a one-hour pilot and 13 half-hour episodes, the project represents the first scripted series greenlit by the new TV division at MGM, led by Jim Packer, president of the worldwide TV distribution group. The series kicks off on G4 in fall 2007.

Rex Mundi (which in latin means ‘king of the world’) posits an alternate present of 1933 in which the Reformation never happened, the Inquisition is still in full swing, Europe remains dominated by the Catholic Church and the rest of the world consists of colonies.

300A new promo trailer for Zack Snyder’s 300 is online at iFilm. 300 is an adaptation of the Frank Miller (Sin City) graphic novel, which is brought to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture Snyder’s distinct vision of this ancient historic tale. Warner Bros. will release the film on March 9.

The movie is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy.

PittBritish tabloids are reporting that while there may be another sequel to the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise will not be returning, clearly because Paramount Pictures recently severed all ties to Cruise. Rumor has it that instead none other than Brad Pitt will be starring in a future Mission: Impossible IV. An insider told a British tabloid that the writers may explain the absence of Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt and are “considering a brief mention, saying that Hunt retired to live a safe life with his new wife,” adding that “they’re set on Brad taking over as the gutsy new head operative who puts together his own unique team of specialists.”

theprestige.jpgA new trailer has been released for The Prestige.

The Prestige tells the tale of a pair of rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London. Each has a winning trick the other craves, but so arcane is the nature of these tricks, so incredibly difficult are they to perform, that they take on a peculiar life of their own, in one case involving a mysterious apparent double identity, in the other a reliance on the ferocious powers unleashed in the early experimental years of electricity. The rivalry of the two men is such that in the end, though both are ashamed of the strength of their feelings of spite and envy, it consumes them both, and affects their respective families for generations.

The Prestige is directed by Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins) and stars Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, David Bowie, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson. Click here to watch the trailer.

The Impending Oil Crisis

quote I am a little leary of the situation. The truth will come out when, and if the US economy, and the dollar begins to strengthen. If prices remain high, you’ll know someone is lying. Either OPEC doesn’t have the supply they claim they have, or Analysts are incorrect when they say demand has decreased. Personally, I don’t buy the claim that demand has decreased. Population is ever increasing, so, the the demand should always be increasing. quote
