Philip Pullman, the author of the His Dark Materials trilogy, was invited to visit Shepperton Studios the other day, to witness how the film adaptation of The Golden Compass (the first installment) is shaping up. Recounting the experience in his September message, the author mentions his enthusiasm on seeing his book come to life: “Not a great deal has been built yet, but I could see from the artwork how sumptuous and extraordinary this film will look [...] And the costumes! A staffer from Harry Potter fansite The Leaky Cauldron was recently invited to the headquarters of EA, one of the biggest video game production companies, who are currently working closely together with Warner to create a very authentic video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. EA is using actual film blueprints to base the game on, meaning the settings she got to see were very close to what will eventually feature in the film. Christopher Nolan is currently editing and promoting The Prestige, and while discussing that film with various movie sites who promise to have their interviews with him online soon, Nolan was also questioned about the Batman sequel The Dark Knight.
The director stressed how his interest in the sequel lies in moving on from Batman Begins and doing something quite different: “I think, what people responded to most about Batman Begins is how different it was from their expectations. So I think we would be foolish to not recognize that and attempt to do something very different in the sequel. I certainly wouldn’t have any interest in trying to repeat the experience that the film already made because I think, particularly being an origin story, it’s a very unique thing.”

French star Vincent Cassel (Irreversible, Ocean’s Twelve; you probably know him as Monica Belucci’s hubby) has been cast in David Cronenberg’s new film Eastern Promise. Cassel will star as Petrid (who’s family owns a Russian Brothel) alongside Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen. Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) will provide the script. Cronenberg is the director of cult films such as The Fly, Crash, eXistenZ, and A History of Violence, while his upcoming Maps To The Stars is currently in pre-production.
The London-based thriller Eastern Promise centers on a nurse (Watts) investigating the identity of a young Russian prostitute who dies in childbirth. She unwittingly stumbles into a Russian police operation that seeks to expose a major Russian Mafia prostitution ring.
