WETA Originals (an offshoot of New Zealand’s WETA Workshop effects house) is producing what could possibly be one of the coolest series of sci-fi collectibles ever: 1900s-style rayguns, like something straight out of a Jules Verne novel or “Amazing Stories”. They’re not beholden to any particular franchise - these are entirely original creations, and they’re amazing. No word yet on what the pricing will be like or when they’ll go on sale. Click here to see the three models (the FMOM Industries Wave Disruptor Gun, the Goliathon 83, and my favorite, the Manmelter 3600ZX).

While a thirty-second teaser including brand-new clips from the third season of Battlestar Galactica, arguably the best TV series currently on show, premiered with the 200th episode of Stargate SG-1 this week, Sci Fi Channel’s executive vice president of original programming, Mark Stern, recently revealed that they have received a script for the pilot episode of Caprica, the planned Galactica prequel series.
Rob Owen from the Post-Gazette attended a Sci Fi Channel party, where he took his chance at asking Stern some Battlestar and Caprica related questions. He said October’s third season premiere will be two hours in length and the 18 hours to follow will air consecutively with just a short break around the Christmas holidays.

Aint-it-cool-news has the first clear images of Megatron, the Decepticon leader in Michael Bay’s live action adaptation of the Transformers. If you’re familiar with the cartoon, the first thing you’ll notice is that Megatron is nothing like his Generation 1 counterpart. In fact, he doesn’t even transform into a gun anymore, but into an ‘Alien Jet’, as the description on one of the images reads. The reason against the gun probably was Bay’s notion that all the transformations should be physically possible (in the cartoon Megatron was far taller in his humanoid mode than as a gun). The images are held in a very similar style to the previously leaked images of other Transformers, which Michael Bay has since confirmed to be legit (albeit early) renderings.

Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.
After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is — and isn’t — a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.

More Spider-Man films?
In an interview with MTV, Marvel Studios’ president of production Kevin Feige said there will be more Spider-Man films.
“There will be many more Spider-Man films to come,” he promised. “We already have stacks of ideas for the next one because of the wealth of stories in the comics. We could be making Spider-Man movies for the next 20 years, based on the 50 years of Spider-Man history we have.”

Paul Bettany (Master And Commander, The Da Vinci Code) may have missed out on His Dark Materials (Bettany was rumoured to be the front runner for the part of Lord Asriel until Daniel Craig snatched the role last week), but according to Variety, he has now joined a different fantasy project to be produced by New Line Cinema. The Studio has hired him to star opposite Brendan Fraser (The Mummy, Crash) in the fantasy film Inkheart, to be directed by Iain Softley (K-Pax, The Skeleton Key).
Inkheart revolves around a girl whose father has the power to bring characters from books to life by reading aloud.

Christopher Paolini, author of the best selling fantasy novel Eragon, has been talking about the movie and game adaptation of his book in his latest Alagaesia Newsletter. The following is a full reprint-
“News! Last month, I traveled to Los Angeles and visited Fox studios, where I met some of the many people involved with the Eragon movie. I also got to watch clips of the film itself. It was both strange and exciting to see images based on something I wrote! The teaser trailer Fox showed me contained only brief glimpses of the world and characters, although a dragon is always memorable, no matter how fleeting her appearance.

Sources from Wal-Mart are reporting that stores everywhere will be offering an incentive for fans to buy the “unaltered” versions of the original Star Wars Trilogy from them. Each Trilogy DVD sold at Wal-Mart will come with a reprint of the movie’s original comic book adaptation. This is the first (and supposedly only) time that Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi will be released to DVD in their original, unaltered, un-”Special Edition” cuts. Each film, sold separately as opposed to in a box set, will contain two discs: one containing the most recent cut of the film (created for the OT’s first DVD release in 2004) and the other containing the original cut from 1977, 1980, and 1983 respectively. The DVDs hit stores September 12, but according to Lucasfilm will go out of print at the end of December.
