Paul Bettany (The Da Vinci Code, Master & Commander) will not take up the role of Lord Asriel in New Line’s The Golden Compass, the first installment of author Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. According to fansite Bridge To The Stars, a New Line informant claims he can “guarantee that Paul Bettany is not cast in this movie”. This statement contradicts recent media rumours that suggested Bettany was in final negotiations for the role, brought to his attention by his Dogma co-star Nicole Kidman, who was cast in the role of Mrs. Coulter. Filming under director Chris Weitz (About A Boy) starts September 4th in the UK, so an official announcement regarding the casting for the part of Lord Asriel can be expected sooner rather than later.

The first footage of the film was screened at Comic Con a couple of weeks ago - to great response - but Snyder himself has unfortunately denied that the footage would be released online. Instead, a teaser trailer is currently being prepared and should debut online and in theaters at the end of the month.
