Ahoy there!

As I’m writing this review and as you’re reading it, the film I am reviewing has just broken the record for the biggest opening weekend ever. Which comes as no surprise, as I’m not the only one who’s been awaiting this sequel. When I heard they were going to be doing two sequels to Pirates of the Carribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, my first reaction was, “Oh, shit.” Because finally here was an excellent adventure movie, the likes of which they really need to make more of, and now they’re gonna go and screw it up with a sequel that won’t be as good and will thus blacken the reputation of the original.

The skinny is, thank God I was wrong. Dead Man’s Chest isn’t quite as good as the original (which is one of my favorite movies of all time) but it’s pretty damn close.

Written in 1995 by Christopher Priest, The Prestige centres around two very different stage magicians, Alfred Borden and Rupert Angier. Borden has humble beginnings as a poor carpenter whilst Angier is from a privileged aristocratic background. Early in the respective magician’s careers, during a fraudulent séance, a bitter rivalry is sparked which escalates into a full blown feud. The story is told from the perspective of the magicians modern day descendants who must unravel the mysteries of their ancestors rivalry.

day of the deadBlackfilm reports that Mena Suvari (not Mira Sorvino as has been mentioned) and Ving Rhames have joined the cast of Day of the Dead, the remake of the George A Romero zombie classic. The two actors will appear alongisde Michael Welch, Annalynne McCord, Stark Sands, and Nick Cannon in the Jeffrey Reddick penned feature.

The reimagined Day of the Dead will be directed by Steve Miner (Lake Placid, Halloween H20) with principal photography beginning later this month. At the moment it’s unclear whether the story will be set in an underground military bunker like the original.

2008 U.S. Presidential election

quoteI prefer Obama to McCain. Now, McCain’s better than average for a Republican. And though his ads are intellectually offensive, he’s just bowing to his campaign masters and would calm down and be more sane once in office and not campaigning. But I have a few concerns with McCain on foreign policy. He’s not a full-fledged Neocon. That’s good. He opposed Reagan on Lebanon. Good. He was critical of Bush’s initial strategy in Iraq. That’s good. But there’s a problem. He thinks the Vietnam war was winnable and that the US shouldn’t have withdrawn. He’s also eager to spread democracy with force. This just isn’t a good set of beliefs for inheriting Iraq.quote
