30 Days of NightAustralian actress Melissa George (Home & Away, Alias, The Amityville Horror) has signed to star opposite Josh Hartnett in the film adaptation of the Steve Niles comic mini-series 30 Days of Night.

The film is set in the sleepy, secluded Alaska town of Barrow, where the sun sets and doesn’t rise for over thirty consecutive days and nights. From the darkness, across the frozen wasteland, an evil comes that brings the residents of Barrow to their knees. As the last rays of light fade, the town is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires bent on an uninterrupted orgy of destruction. The only hope for the town is the Sheriff and Deputy, a husband and wife who are torn between their own survival and saving the town they love.

The film will be directed by David Slade with a screenplay by Stuart Beattie and released in October 2007. With Sam Raimi in the producer’s chair, this could be well worth waiting for.

The big screen outing for Marvel comic book superhero Iron Man might be a long way off (due for release in 2008) but as anticipation builds amongst fans, director Jon Favreau has taken time to answer questions about the project on his Myspace site:

Fan:
1. Will Tony inherit his forturne a la Lex Luthor, or will we see him earn his fortune throughout the course of the film?
2. The classic Kill Bill question: Is Tony Stark’s pretending to be Iron Man or is Iron Man pretending to be Tony Stark?

Jon Favreau:
1. Inherits
2. Tony is the dominant personality.

Sylvester Stallone has been talking to Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming Rambo IV. Production on the movie which is untitled at present is expected to commence in October in Thailand.

”You know, it’s hard,” says the 60-year-old star. ”Politics have changed so much. Who do we fight? The Finns? You can’t do that. The Dutch? That’s not gonna work. Wooden shoes are not gonna look cool.”

After ruling out the Middle East, Africa, and Korea, the actor finally hit on a solution-

”I called Soldier of Fortune magazine and said, ‘What is the most critical man-doing-inhumanity-to-man situation right now in the world? Where is it?”’ The answer was Burma.

We have decided to drop the integrated Invision portal and move over to a Wordpress powered front end. Wordpress is a state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform or more simply, a blogging tool built on PHP and MySQL that is used by hundreds of thousands of sites across the web.

This revised format will allow us to present our news in a more digestible and structured way and archive our articles in categories. This archiving permits visitors to browse the news according to subject (e.g. Star Wars news, Harry Potter news) going some way to creating what we originally planned for our Realms. Eventually we intend to have dedicated miniportals for each Realm with additional static content.

The flexibility to allow contributors to submit news and commentary in a much simpler fashion should also enable us to stay more up-to-date and relevant. You will also notice that we have managed to port across a number of the old articles, altering the timestamp for each one and dropping them into categories. All of the old articles will eventually be migrated to the new format.

The new portal also has a history section which is very much a work in progress. At the moment there is only a history of Episode-X and the X-Realms but this will be expanded greatly with graphics, links and profiles of other sites.

From BBC News:

The large James Bond stage at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire has been destroyed by fire. At least eight fire engines tackled the blaze at the set, where filming for the new movie Casino Royale had finished. Eyewitness Jen McVean, who owns a firm at the studios in Iver Heath, said the stage had been “completely on fire”. The sound stage had been transformed into a replica Venice where the film, with a reported budget of £39m ($72m), is partly based. The roof covering the stage caved in through fire damage and firefighters used special equipment to reach it.

According to Variety Nicole Kidman has finally signed on the dotted line to join the cast of His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass. After rumours that began circulating last month, it seems that the Australian actress will indeed be playing the villainous Mrs. Coulter in the $150 million production. Filming is set to commence at Shepperton Studios in London in September.

The Golden Compass is New Line Cinema’s film adaptation of the first book in Philip Pullman’s Carnegie Medal-winning His Dark Materials trilogy, a dimension-crossing odyssey that builds from a merely atypical children’s adventure into a complex (and frequently quite dark) philosophical epic.

The book tells the story of a child called Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) who sets out with a dæmon called Pantalaimon to find her friend Roger. The ensuing quest leads them to the bleak splendour of the North, where armoured bears rule the ice and witch-queens fly through the frozen skies - and where a team of scientists is conducting experiments too horrible to be spoken about.

Lyra overcomes these strange terrors, only to find something yet more perilous waiting for her - something with consequences which may even reach beyond the Northern Lights…

They came in droves. Thousands of them hoping to see their favorite stars, watch exclusive trailers and gaze at the beauty of geekdom. There were celebrities, large men with comic books in hand and their pants falling down. There were stormtroopers and Jedi, not-so-hot women in skimpy anime costumes and some idiot named Shawn who isn’t the brightest when it comes to Zombies.

But it was Bryan Singer who started the convention off with a bang announcing his intentions for a sequel of Superman Returns.

“I plan to get all Wrath of Khan on it,” Singer said. “We haven’t concluded a deal. That’s always iffy but the intention’s to do it for 2009.”

The Impending Oil Crisis

quote I am a little leary of the situation. The truth will come out when, and if the US economy, and the dollar begins to strengthen. If prices remain high, you’ll know someone is lying. Either OPEC doesn’t have the supply they claim they have, or Analysts are incorrect when they say demand has decreased. Personally, I don’t buy the claim that demand has decreased. Population is ever increasing, so, the the demand should always be increasing. quote
